The 1775 Capture of Fort Ticonderoga

At 4 o'clock in the morning on May 10, 1775 Benedict Arnold and Ethan Allen along with eighty Green Mountain Boys rushed out of the night to take Fort Ticonderoga. One British sentry outside the Fort's main gate attempted to fire at the patriot onslaught, but was foiled by wet powder in his musket's priming pan. As he rushed back into the Fort he left the small sally port door open allowing the American force to rush in. Captain William de la Place's tiny garrison was taken by surprise and made prisoner, perhaps still unaware of the events of Lexington and Concord less than a month before. This small first victory opened a northern campaign that would carry through the next two years, with Fort Ticonderoga at its heart.
