The French Soldiers of the Battle of Carillon
July 7th & 8th 2012
On the anniversary of the Battle of Carillon we recreate the highly disciplined French regular soldiers with which General Montcalm held the breastwork line at Fort Carillon in 1758. Outnumbered nearly four to one, these veteran French soldiers built and manned a system of log breastworks and abattis covering the high ground of the Ticonderoga peninsula. In the aftermath of the day-long battle, the French soldiers erected a cross at the center of the breastwork in celebration of their astounding victory over the British. At this living history we will explore the daily life, drill, and discipline of the soldiers of King Louis XV on duty at Fort Carillon.
