From markets to marriages, see the surprising connections between the 26th Regiment of Foot and American colonists as war loomed on the horizon.

“This living history event captures the interaction between British Fort Ticonderoga and civilians living in the region,” said Beth L. Hill, Fort Ticonderoga president & CEO. “Before the Revolutionary War, local Americans saw themselves as British subjects and happily engaged with British soldiers for security and trade.”

Highlighted programming will recreate the daily life of the Guard of the British Army and their families, who resided within the fort’s barracks. Interact with working cattle and fluffy sheep who were vital to life for the British garrison. Savor the aromas of a traditional soldiers’ dinner and meet the skilled craftsmen who were integral to the British Army, keeping soldiers clothed and shoed. Examine the genteel distinctions officers enjoyed in their food, creature comforts, and more.

Explore the Living Community:

Throughout the day, watch the market assemble at Ticonderoga with local farmers eager to trade vegetables and other produce. Discover the British naval side of peacetime Lake Champlain, as the hearty crew of His Majesty’s sloop prepared for spring.

See British Military Preparations:
Even as peace continued, the British government quietly prepared Fort Ticonderoga for potential war. Watch British soldiers practice their marksmanship firing at targets. Step into Fort Ticonderoga’s powder magazine, handle reproduction cannon shot, and learn about the ongoing work to maintain artillery ammunition.
