Living History at Fort Ticonderoga

MUSEUM EXHIBITIONS

Discover the objects that helped shape the nations of North America in Fort Ticonderoga's museum! Historic weapons, engraved powder horns, and everyday objects used by soldiers help tell the story of how history was made at Ticonderoga.

ANNUAL SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS in the Deborah Clarke Mars Education Center exhibition gallery highlight rarely-seen treasures from the museum's century-old collections.

NEW EXHIBIT in 2011 and extended through 2012 by popular demand! The Art of War: Ticonderoga as Experienced through the Eyes of America's Great Artists

Fifty works from the Fort's extensive art collection are brought together for the first time in a single exhibition, to present a visual history of Fort Ticonderoga. Fort Ticonderoga helped give birth to the Hudson River school of American art with Thomas Cole's pivotal 1826 work, Gelyna, or a View Near Ticonderoga, the museum's most important 19th-century masterpiece to be featured in the exhibit.

NEW EXHIBIT in 2012! Bullets & Blades: The Weapons of America’s Colonial Wars and Revolution

Fort Ticonderoga’s newest exhibit will bring together the museum’s best weapons and the most recent scholarship to present a fresh interpretation of its rich history and the role arms played in the founding of America and its struggle for liberty.

For over a century, Fort Ticonderoga has been recognized for its extensive and encyclopedic collection of historic weapons. A staple of the museum’s exhibitions for the past 80+ years has been its displays of weapons of the colonial wars and Revolution. In recent years significant additions have been made to the collection through strategic acquisition and major donation.

The most significant addition to the collection in recent years was the donation of the Grafton H. and Barbara W. Cook Collection of early weapons. The Cook Collection greatly supplements the museum’s already impressive collection of early weapons by filling significant holes and greatly broadening its scope in several key areas.

Organized by theme, this exhibit will explore the roles of military, civil, and hunting weapons in early American society and how through necessity and design, these weapons all came together to arm a fledgling American army struggling to become free.
