Fort Ticonderoga, in partnership with Mount Vernon, invites regional teachers to attend a free one-day teacher workshop focused on George Washington and Henry Knox on Friday, October 13, 2017. The workshop will take place in the Mars Education Center at Fort Ticonderoga from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and includes lunch and coffee.
Through this one-day workshop, teachers will examine the relationship between Washington and Knox through rich content, primary sources, and a tour of Fort Ticonderoga. Participants will:
- Explore the life, leadership, and legacy of both George Washington and Henry Knox.
- Join in primary source analysis workshops and learn how to bring them into the classroom.
- Use the power of place to tell the story of Washington and Knox during the Revolutionary War and examine the lives of the common soldier at Ticonderoga.
- Gain strategies and new methodology for teaching to take back to their classrooms.
During the winter of 1775-76, Henry Knox famously undertook the task of transporting 59 pieces of artillery from Ticonderoga to Cambridge, Massachusetts, for the use of the new Continental Army at the Siege of Boston. General Washington used that artillery in March 1776 to force the British evacuation of Boston after a nearly yearlong siege. The trust and respect Knox earned during this incredible feat led to a strong life-long friendship between the two.
