The Patriots faced a desperate situation in the summer of 1776 as the British prepared a fleet and an invading army whose success could have spelled the end of the Revolution. A two-pronged effort restored the defensive capability of the army at the fort and floated a squadron of gunboats that stunned the British invaders, putting off the reckoning for another year.
Jack Kelly is the award-winning author of the new book Valcour: The 1776 Campaign that Save the Cause of Liberty.
