Over 40,000 soldiers and civilians crossed the Ticonderoga peninsula during the 18th century, each wearing dozens of buttons on their clothing. It’s nothing really surprising that over 2,000 buttons have been recovered from the ruins. These are buttons that tell us not just who was here, but the incredible complexity and extent of 18th-century trade and military institutions.
