This fascinating study of the garden at Fort Ticonderoga, first noted in 1609 by Samuel de Champlain, makes a major contribution to America's rich garden history. Lucinda Brockway thoroughly documents the changing landscape through historical accounts, on-site studies, and oral history, placing the contributions of successive occupants of the site in a lively social and historical context. The focus of Brockway's study is the contribution of the Pell family, who made a picturesque pleasure ground around their summer home on the shore. In 1912 Stephen and Sarah Pell made a walled flower garden (called "The King's Garden" after the name used in the 18th century by the British army to refer to the garrison garden on the site) and commissioned a plan from Marian Cruger Coffin in 1920.

This book traces the events that led to the American Revolution. It explains the ideas about the right to self-government that began to circulate in the colonies during the 1760s. It discusses the rising tensions as Britain imposed repressive policies on the colonies, which in turn led some American leaders to promote independence. Although the war might have been avoided if both sides had been willing to compromise, by 1775 conflict was inevitable.

While Ethan Allen's legend has endured through four centuries of American history, he remains perhaps the least understood of America's Founding fathers. Willard Sterne Randall finally gives a three-dimensional portrait to this venerated leader of the Green Mountain Boys, a man whose fame was so great that he became a mythical figure even in his own lifetime.
