The Fort Ticonderoga Author Series features presentations by authors of books related to Fort Ticonderoga’s history.

In his book Québec Under Siege: French Eye-Witness Accounts from the Campaign of 1759, Charles Mayhood explores the events surrounding the siege and capitulation of the city, as recorded by 4 individuals in their journals and memoirs. These individuals include an artillery captain, a prominent citizen, the emissary traveling between the British and the French commanders, and a Catholic nun working in the main hospital, treating the sick and wounded of both armies. These journals and memoirs bring us inside the siege, allowing us to watch through their eyes as the fate of New France was determined.

Charles Mayhood is an independent researcher with deep local roots. A native of the Adirondacks, Charles developed his interest in military history while an employee here at Fort Ticonderoga, a fife & bugle horn player in the Corps of Drums, a tour guide, and a member of the artillery crew for many years. Charles has a special interest in the first-hand accounts of events from Albany to Québec during the Seven Years’ War and the American Revolution. He researches the letters, journals, and related documents to look at the events as they were seen at the time, by the people engaged in the struggle. Québec Under Siege: French Eye-Witness Accounts from the Campaign of 1759 developed from that research and is the beginning of his explorations of the French point of view.

Your participation in this online program through the Center for Digital History supports Fort Ticonderoga’s mission to preserve, educate, and provoke an active discussion about the past and its importance to present and future generations.
