Riding into the weekend like...

This Hussar's saber was made Solingen, Germany in 1781, and features a lively engraving of a mounted Hussar. Saber raised, he wears the distinctive Hungarian inspired dress of these famous light cavalrymen. 

Hussars in similar attire were the only cavalry that accompanied the Comte de Rochambeau's French expeditionary force to America in 1780. They served during the Yorktown campaign, using sabers much like this to fight perhaps the largest cavalry battle of the Revolutionary War at Gloucester, Virginia, across the York River from Yorktown in early October of 1781.

Fort Ticonderoga recently awarded Dr. Richard Washington Longstreth the 2024 Henry Knox Award. The award was presented at the Ticonderoga Ball held in New York City at The Union League Club on March 22, 2024. The award was given in recognition of Dr. Longstreths’s herculean support and leadership as a Board member of The Fort Ticonderoga Association and his life-long contributions to the field of history and historic preservation.

The Henry Knox Award acknowledges the herculean efforts of Richard in his work on behalf of The Fort Ticonderoga Association. Henry Knox is best known for his role in hauling 60 tons of artillery from Ticonderoga to relieve the siege of Boston over the winter of 1775 to 1776. This feat was justly regarded as a model of fortitude and perseverance. Similarly, Richard has shown that same spirit which motivated Henry Knox on that mission to do the heavy lifting needed to ensure that this institution, like the revolution, would survive and flourish.

Stay warm sailor!

Temperatures have recently dipped up here at Ticonderoga, which got us thinking about cozy knitwear one last time. This comfy, and jaunty looking, knit cap from the Robert Nittolo Collection was found in New York City, buried deep off the east side of lower Manhattan. It is likely a reminder of the thousands of sailors coming and going along New York's docks during the 18th century.

Speaking of books on campaign... its World Book Day!

What could be more appropriate than a copy of one the oldest stories, Homer's "Iliad." This particular copy is a 1760 edition of Alexander Pope's English translation, but what makes it even more special is the binding. This four volume set is uniformly bound with the name of its owner, Lieutenant Colonel Henry Harnage.

Homer's tale of the trails of the Trojan War must have held a special significance for Harnage who, as Major of the 62nd Regiment of Foot had participated in General John Burgoyne's northern campaign of 1777. Severely wounded at the Battle of Freeman's Farm, Henry and his wife Honour who accompanied him, endured their own odyssey surviving wounds, illness, and captivity in America before finally getting back to England in 1780. He probably bought these books in early 1782, when he became Lieutenant Colonel of the 104th Regiment of Foot.

Harnage's "Iliad" will be on display this year in out "Revolutionary Anthology: Power of Place" exhibit.
